Date: Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26, 2018 Location: Dickinson High School
Wilmington, DE
Showtimes: Friday 7:00 pm and Saturday 2:00 pm

For more than three decades, Longwood Performing Arts has provided students with an exciting performance experience through its Annual Student Performance. The annual staple of the dance school, the recital, is a rite of passage for thousands of youngsters. It is a chance to shine in front of family and friends that they anticipate with nervous excitement. The recital offers our students a professionally directed performance that allows them to present to their families and friends the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress.

If you have any questions regarding the information below, we encourage you to contact the office at 610-444-6144 between the hours of 12 pm and 6 pm.

We spend many hours determining the correct costumes for each class. They are always age-appropriate and of the highest quality possible. Students cannot participate in the recital without a costume.  All students will need one costume for each class they attend. Costumes include all accessories (hats, gloves, etc.), but not tights or shoes.

NOTE: No jewelry or underwear is to be worn with girl’s costumes. This includes during dress rehearsals and performances and when class pictures are taken.

In an effort to ensure that costumes are delivered in time for alterations, and an organized distribution to our students, costume orders are placed during the December holiday break. Costume manufacturers do not accept cancellations or offer refunds; therefore the school does not refund costume deposits. The cost of costumes is $90.00/costume.  Accessories, such as headpieces or gloves, are included in the cost of the costume. Tights and shoes are not included. Costumes will not be distributed until they are paid for in full. Parents or guardians accept full responsibility for all expenses, including surcharges and postage for costumes that are ordered late.

Costume deposits are due by the 1st of each month during December and February (with your monthly tuition payment). A $5 late fee per costume will be charged to accounts if the costume balance is not paid by March 1, 2018. Enclosed you will find a Recital Permission Form to be filled out and returned with the first December Costume Deposit.  If you prefer an alternate payment plan, please check with the Studio Office. We will accept cash, checks, credit cards or money orders for costume deposits/payments.  Please write your child’s name in the memo portion of the check. If you pay with cash, please ask for a receipt. No refunds will be made if a parent or guardian withdraws a child from the school after costumes have been ordered and prior to the recital. Purchased costumes may be picked up at the school during the costume distribution period.

Costume measuring begins during scheduled class times. Each child will be measured in order to determine his or her proper costume size(s).  If a student is not measured in class for costumes by December please contact the studio at 610-444-6144.  When the costumes arrive they are tried on to make sure the fit is perfect.   If there are any alterations the studio will take care of them and get them prepared for distribution.

Costumes will be distributed when all outstanding balances for the season (including tuition) are paid in full. The deadline for all balances due is May 1. Please try on all costumes and accessories (except for tights) as soon as you bring them home. This allows you to account for all accessories and determine whether alterations are needed. Doing this well in advance of the recital minimizes stress at performance time.  To ensure that there are no costume problems, students should not wear their costumes, accessories, or tights prior to their photo session, dress rehearsal, or performance.  Please make sure that all accessories stay with each costume.  We do not have any extras.

We recommend that you label all costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights with your child’s name.  The costumes will be distributed in a plastic garment bag with your child’s name on the outside.  Pack accessories in a clear plastic bag with your child’s name on the bag and on each item.  Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine; dry clean them only (after the recital).

Students must wear a cover-up when in costume outside of the dressing room area. Dancers are not permitted in the lobby in costume. A bathrobe or swimsuit cover-up work best.  Tap shoes may not be worn anywhere but the stage area.  Dancers need to bring slipper socks to place on top of the tap shoes for safety purposes. Please do not arrive to dress rehearsals or performances in costume.

Tights, Shoes, Hair, & Make-Up

To ensure that there are no discrepancies in color and style, students will be notified of the required tights for their classes. Tights are available at Longwood Dance Supply. Be sure to purchase the correct style. Please make sure tights are clean and have no holes.  Having a second pair of tights on hand offers students and parents a great sense of security.

All shoe requirements correspond to their normal class dress code. Please see the Longwood Performing Arts 2017-2018 Handbook for further information.

All female students are required to wear makeup for the dress rehearsal and the recital: red lipstick, blush, eye shadow (not blue), and mascara. For the boys, a little blush works well.  Uniform hairstyles are required. Dancers with short hair must pull their hair away from the face and slick it down.

Dress Rehearsals

Dress Rehearsals will be held at Dickinson High School in Wilmington, DE.  Participation in the dress rehearsal is mandatory. The dress rehearsal allows the students to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and feel comfortable with their performance, costume(s), and being onstage. Lighting, music cues, set changes, and all other logistics for an organized and professional performance are rehearsed so that the students make the best impression possible.

We run an organized and timely dress rehearsal; your help with the process will guarantee a professional production. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your on stage rehearsal time with hair and make-up. Please allow one hour from the time your child is scheduled to dance for corrections and a couple of run-throughs.  Wear street clothes and shoes.  Bring all costumes, dance shoes and make up in a separate bag.

Recital Photography & Videos

Class photos will be taken on Saturday May 5, 2018 at Longwood Performing Arts. After the group photo shoot, students may choose to have an individual portrait made in any or all of their costumes. There is no obligation to purchase individual or group photos.

Consider it the same as a performance. All female students are required to wear makeup: red lipstick, blush, eye shadow (not blue), and mascara. For the boys, a little blush works well.  Uniform hairstyles are required. All female students must wear their hair in a bun. Dancers with short hair must pull their hair away from the face.

Pricing information and order forms for photos, DVDs, and T-shirts will be distributed in the Spring Recital packet. The recital will be professionally videotaped. Forms will also be available at the dress rehearsal and the recital for those who would like to purchase videos. The use of any personal electronic device during the performance is not permitted.  It is also very distracting to both the dancers and audience members around you.

Parents or guardians may videotape or photograph their children at the dress rehearsal only. No electrical outlets will be available, so be sure your batteries are fully charged. Please note: No video or photography will be allowed at the recital.
