Class Descriptions and Dress Code

Each student’s class placement is individual and carefully considered. Our faculty advises students on which classes would be best for him/her after discussing age, experience and if needed, a through evaluation.

Division 1 – Ages 3 and 4 years

The Division 1 has been designed to introduce students to the basics of ballet and tap, emphasizing body positions and coordination.

Dress Code

Black or yellow dance dress with attached skirt. See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet/Tap 1: Students will need pink tights, pink ballet slippers, black mary jane tap shoes and hair pulled up in a bun.

Division 2 – Ages 5 and 6 years. Kindergarten/First Grade Fall 2015

Division 2 classes are structured classes for the beginner student (or Division 1 graduate).

Dress Code

Pink or black dance dress with an attached skirt. See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet/Tap 2: Students will need pink tights, pink ballet slippers, black mary jane tap shoes and hair pulled up in a bun.

Division 3 – Ages 6 – 8 years

Division 3 offers structured classes in Ballet, Jazz/Hip-Hop and Tap.

Dress Code

Periwinkle or black dance dress with an attached skirt. See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet 3: Students will need pink tights, pink ballet slippers and hair in a bun.
Jazz/Hip-Hop 3: Students will need any color tights, pink ballet slippers and hair pulled up.
Tap 3: Students will need light suntan tights, black ankle strap tap shoes and hair pulled up.

Division 4 – Ages 7 – 9 years

Division 4 offers structured classes for the experienced student.

Dress Code

Black dance dress with an attached skirt or a black leotard. Students may wear accessories (ballet skirt for Ballet, fitted jazz shorts, jazz pants for Jazz/Hip-Hop or Tap). See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet 4: Students will need pink tights, pink ballet slippers and hair in a bun.
Jazz/Hip-Hop 4: Students will need any color tights, tan jazz shoes and hair pulled up.
Tap 4: Students will need light suntan tights, black ankle strap tap shoes and hair pulled up.

Division 5 – Ages 9 – 11 years

Division 5 Levels are structured classes for the experienced student.

Dress Code

Black leotard. Students may wear accessories (ballet skirt for Ballet, fitted jazz shorts, jazz pants for Jazz/Hip-Hop or Tap). See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet 5: Students will need pink tights, pink ballet slippers and hair in a bun. Recommended two times per week.
Jazz/Hip-Hop 5: Students will need any color tights, tan jazz shoes, and hair pulled up.
Tap 5: Students will need any color tights, black ankle strap tap shoes and hair pulled up.

Division A

Division A Levels are designed for the more serious experienced dance student. Students at this level are required to attend a ballet class when they are taking any other style of dance.

Dress Code

Any solid color leotard and any color tights with hair pulled up. See below for required shoes.

Ballet: Pre-Pointe and/or Pointe work is included in this class. It is required that students attend two ballet classes per week in A Ballet to be able to do pointe work. Students will need any color convertible tights, pink ballet slippers and hair pulled up in a bun.
Jazz: Students will need any color tights and tan jazz shoes.
Hip-Hop: Students will need any color tights and black jazz sneakers.
Tap: Students will need any color tights and black flat tap shoes.
Lyrical: Students will need any color tights and tan jazz shoes.
Modern: Students will need any color footless tights.

Division B, C, & D

Students at this level have made a commitment to dance. Together with the faculty, students customize their schedule to best suit their goals and abilities. These levels are designed for the advanced student committed to daily training and aspiring to a career in dance. It is required that students attend at least two ballet classes per week to be in these levels.

Dress Code

Any solid color leotard and any color tights with hair pulled up. See below for tights and shoes.

Ballet: Students will need any color convertible tights, pink ballet slippers and hair in a bun.
Pointe: It is required that students enrolled in any pointe class attend two ballet classes and two pointe classes per week.
Jazz: Students will need any color tights and tan jazz shoes.
Hip-Hop: Students will need any color tights and black jazz sneakers.
Lyrical: Students will need any color tights and tan jazz shoes.
Tap: Students will need any color tights and black flat tap shoes.
Modern: Students will need any color footless tights.

Teen Division

The Teen Division is designed for the student who is dancing for recreation and enjoyment. Students in the Teen Division are 12 years and up.

Dress Code

Any solid color leotard and any color tights with hair pulled up. See below for required shoes.

Ballet: Students will need pink ballet slippers, any color convertible tights, pointe shoes if recommended by the teacher, and hair in a bun.
Jazz: Students will need any color tights and tan jazz shoes.
Hip-Hop: Students will need any color tights and black jazz sneakers.
Tap: Students will need any color tights and black flat tap shoes.
Modern: Students will need any color footless tights.

Adult Division

The Adult Division is designed for Adult students who are dancing for recreation and enjoyment.

Boys

Boys are invited and encouraged to join classes at Longwood Performing Arts. For more information regarding Boys classes, required attire/shoes or tuition rates, please call 610-444-6144.

Dress Code

Black or White T-shirt, Black Jazz Pants, sweatpants or athletic shorts, and the proper shoes.
